Dr.Chettiar's Correspondence

Letter from C.D. Dechmukh

New Delhi

       28th December, 55

My Dear Alagappa Chettiar,

I am gratefully touched, by your friendly letter of July 28, 1956. I appreciate very much the goodwill that has prompted you to write from your sick-bed. Soon after we saw you we called upon Rajaji. We talked of you. ,What a record of munificence and philanthropy you had and what a terrible tragedy tha suffering should be your lot. One gets tongue tiea when one visits friends in distress and we cannot tell you how deeply we feel for you. So far as I am concerned, it is too early to take too tragic a view.

Yours  very sincerely, ,

Sd...G.D. Deshmukj

Dear Dr. Alagappa Chettiar,

I received your letter of 31st August, but you will realise that the question is one on which it is not for me to take a decision. I called for the papers and found that opinions had been expressed on an optical level on some secondary issues. In my opinion the main decision, i.e., whether a Central University is needed in the South, and if so when and where it should established, is for the Government to decide and not the Commission.

With kindest regards, Yours   sincerely

Dear Alagappa Chettiar,

Thank you for your letter of 23rd February, 1957. I am glad to learn that you are feeling a little better.

My lectures are the property of the Dadabhai Naoroji Trust Bombay, who are arranging to print and publish them.

I did not say that the Central Government had decided to establish a Central University in the South, but only that the question of whether there should be such a University was open in principle, latterly, however, the indications are that owing to scarcity of resources the matter is not likely to be investigated. In any case no formal reference of any such issue has been made to the University Grants Commission.

With kindest regards from my wife and myself. Yours   sincerely
