The patient is typically an adolescent or young adult with a long history of aching and slight swelling over the bone. Occasionally there are recurrent attacks of more acute pain accompanied by malaise and slight fever. There are small lytic lesions in the metaphysis, usually closely adjacent to the physis. Biopsy of the lytic focus is likely to show the typical histological features of acute or subacute inflammation. In longstanding lesions there is a chronic inflammatory reaction with lymphocyte infiltration. Although the condition may run a protracted course, the prognosis is good and the lesions eventually heal without complications.
