Dear Alagappa Alumni and Friends

It is with great pleasure that we inform you that we are celebrating the 100th birthday of Dr. RM. Alagappa Chettiar.

His life was full of accolades and accomplishments as he passionately converted a 1000 acre parcel of jungle into a galaxy of educational institutions. He passed away at a tender age of 48, in the midst of single handedly revolutionizing his native place by bringing professional education to the door step of his community. Perhaps his crowning piece of philanthropy was giving away his own residence in Kottaiyur to found the Women’s college. As Rajaji remarked, "Dr. Alagappa Chettiar had given away freely. Students should develop that quality namely giving money earned for charity. Here is a book of life and students can learn from him on how one can give to good cause, cultivate courage and emulate the spirit of Dr. Alagappa Chettiar."

We encourage Alumni, friends and well wishers to support the educational institutions that he founded. Contributions both financial as well as educational would benefit the Educational Institutions.

The Alagappa Foundation a registered, non-profit organization in the US. All donations in the USA are tax exempt from Federal Income Tax under section 501 (a) of the IRS code and can be made out to Alagappa Foundation Inc. and mailed to 1647 Andorre Glen, Escondido, CA 92029, USA.

The Asoka Charitable Trust, a trust that was founded by Dr. Alagappa Chettiar manages the Alagappa Schools. All donations are tax exempt under Section 80G of I.T. Act. (Address: 49, Gangadeeswarar Koil Street, Purasawalkam, Chennai -600 084.)

OUR RICH HERITAGE:

The Alagappa Schools run by Asoka Charitable Trust is a prestigious Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Chennai, India founded by the eminent philanthropist Dr.Alagappa Chettiar, as a Primary School in 1954. The Alagappa Matriculation and Higher Secondary wings were founded by Dr.Mrs.Umayal Ramanathan in memory of her beloved father Dr.RM.Alagappa Chettiar in 1982 and 1989 respectively. Along with her son, Trustee Mr.R.Vairavan, she has been devoting her efforts to bring this institution to the forefront as one of the best schools in Chennai by providing the best in education with all modern amenities and good discipline. The School motto "BETTER YOUR BEST" signifies that we bring out the best in the children and enable them to rise beyond their perceived limits.

SCHOOL ACHIEVEMENTS:

True to the ideals of the founder, the school has made significant strides over the past years in pursuit of improving the quality of education.

  • A state of art Computer Centre was established in 1999 in Chennai and 2000 in Karaikudi, providing the latest in IT education.
  • Introduced the Smart Class Programme in the classrooms to provide hi-tech audio visual education, set and operated by M/S Educomp.

Our students have distinguished themselves with excellence in academics over past years.
  • State ranks in French over successive years in Plus-2 board exams.
  • Centum in Maths, Physics, Commerce & Accountancy in plus-2 board exams.
SCHOOL INFRASTRUCTURE NEEDS:

To meet the emerging needs of the student population and to celebrate the centenary year of Chettiar the Trust has initiated the construction of Centenary Block comprising the following.
  • Three storied block with 18 class rooms at the cost of Rs. 1.25 crores
  • Science Laboratory(Physics/Chemistry/Biology) at the cost of Rs. 75 lakhs
  • A spacious library at the cost of Rs. 50 lakhs.
APPEAL:

The trust appeals to you, service minded well wishers to donate liberally in terms of amount or books towards this noble venture and support our efforts to meet the emerging heeds of the growing student population.

All donations made to Dr.Alagappa Chettiar Educational trust and Asoka charitable trust will qualify for exemption under section 80G ( applicable for individuals and companies) of the Income Tax Act, 1961.
